Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy is the application of an electric current to the affected area of the body to accelerate healing and reduce swelling and pain.
Electrotherapy is used by our experienced physiotherapists at R.D.Physiotherapy Clinic in Ahinsa Khand 2, Indirapuram,Ghaziabad to treat a variety of conditions.

For What Electrotherapy is used?
Electrotherapy is primarily used in physical therapy for relaxation of muscle spasms, prevention and retardation of disuse atrophy, increase of local blood circulation, muscle rehabilitation and re-education electrical muscle stimulation, maintaining and increasing range of motion, management of chronic and intractable pain, post-traumatic acute pain, post-surgical acute pain, immediate post-surgical stimulation of muscles to prevent venous thrombosis and promote wound healing.
How Does Electrotherapy Works?
Electrotherapy is a physical therapeutic treatment whereby electrical stimulation is applied to nerves and muscle-motor fibers via electro-pads placed on the skin stimulating muscles, triggering the release of endorphins, hormones that act as the body’s natural analgesic.
The type of electrotherapy you receive at R.D.Physiotherapy Clinic will depend on your individual injury and the stage of healing.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation or T.E.N.S is a method of electrical stimulation which aims to provide pain relief by stimulating the sensory nerves and modulating pain. TENS is an alternative to drug treatment as it is a non-invasive treatment technique that has few side effects.
Types of pain treatable by T.E.N.S
TENS is used to relieve pain and may include the following:
- Acute pain – such as sports injuries, acute torticollis, acute low back pain and joint pain, Nerve related pain
- Chronic pain– such as low back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral nerve injuries and phantom limb pain.
Other clinical situations may include:
- Postoperative pain
- Raynaud’s disease pain
- Diabetic neuropathy pain
- In labor and delivery pain

What is Interferential therapy?
Interferential therapy is widely used by physiotherapists. It uses electrical current to reduce swelling, relieve pain and stimulate muscle. Interferential applies two different frequencies that interfere with one another to produce a medium frequency current within the tissues.
When we use interferential?
Interferential is commonly used for pain relief.to promote tissue healing, relieve muscle spasmand stimulate deeply situated muscles such as the pelvic floor muscles.
Interferential therapy is used for the following symptoms:
- Acute and chronic pain e.g. lower back pain and sciatica
- Muscle spasm
- Swelling following ligament sprains and muscle strains
- Incontinence
- Muscle weakness
Examples of musculoskeletal problems that interferential therapy can treat include:
- Lateral epicondylitis/ tennis elbow
- Frozen shoulder
- Osteoarthritis
- Bursitis (inflammation of a bursa)
- Tendinitis (inflammation of a tendon)
- Fractures

What is SWD?
Shortwave diathermy (SWD) uses high-frequency electromagnetic current to promote tissue healing and ease pain. This type of therapy has thermal (mild heating) and non-thermal effects and is effective at treating muscles, nerves, and areas of swelling.
When we use SWD?
SWD therapy is primarily related to the inflammatory and repair phases in soft tissue injury.
The benefits of SWD include:
- Increasing blood flow to the affected area
- Decreasing inflammation
- Improving quality of repair
- Controlling pain
- Facilitating tissue repair by restoring normal cell function
- Muscle relaxation
If appropriate, SWD may be used to treat your condition. For more information or book an assessment please call 08368747586, you can also make appointments online using our online booking system
When a person suffers from an injury, joints or soft tissue may become swollen and painful. Ultrasound will speed up the rate of healing, enhance the quality of repair and increase the strength of the soft tissue. For an acute injury ulltrasound may be pulsed with a low intensity.
Ultrasound can also improve the way collagen is laid down when tissue is trying to repair itself and therefore increase strength and enhance scar mobility.
Chronic Injuries
Ultrasound for chronic conditions will increase blood flow to the affected area and kick start the healing process and decrease pain. Ultrasound may be used in a continuous mode to create this effect.
Ultrasound treatment can be used for a wide range of conditions and will help:
- Promote tissue healing
- Improve quality of repair
- Decrease pain
Ligaments, tendons, fascia, joint capsules and scar tissue contain large amounts of collagen and therefore absorb the ultrasound better and benefit from this type of treatment.
The physiotherapists at R.D.Physiotherapy Clinic in Ahinsa Khand 2, Indirapuram may use ultrasound to treat your condition. For more information or to book an appointment please call 08368747586. You can also book an assessment or appointment with R.D.Physiotherapy Clinic online today!
Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is a type of electrotherapy stimulates a muscle contraction using electrical impulses in order strengthen weak muscles, reduce swelling, relieve pain and help heal wounds.
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) uses high intensities that cause excitation of peripheral nerves to produce a muscle contraction.
The impulses are generated by a device and delivered through electrodes (pads that adhere to the skin) over the middle of the muscles that require stimulating. The impulses from EMS mimic the action potential (stimulus required to make the muscle contract) coming from the central nervous system. This causes the muscles to contract.

When we use EMS?
There are several uses for EMS and NMES which include:
- Pain relief EMS can be used at low levels to reduce the amount of pain you experience. This can be done by modulating the amount of pain signals to the brain or releasing natural pain-killers called endorphins.
- Muscle contraction EMS can be used at different intensities to stimulate a muscle or help maintain muscle tone Examples of this type of therapy include:
- Following a stroke MS can be used to maintain some muscle tone in the shoulder to improve function and reduce pain
- To treat urinary incontinence MS may be used to contract the pelvic floor muscles.
At R.D.Physiotherapy Clinic, in Indirapuram we also use EMS/NMES in the treatment of neurological conditions such as Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, and Cerebral Palsy to decrease spasticity and help maintain muscle strength for as long as possible.
